Dr. Finger joined the Department of Ophthalmology at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and established its first Ocular Oncology Service in 1989. Under Dr. Finger's direction, this clinic has grown and serves up to 30 patients per weekly session.
Within the framework of the Ocular Tumor Service, Dr. Finger teaches ophthalmology residents, visiting ophthalmologists and medical students how to diagnose ocular and orbital tumors. In addition, Dr. Finger gives a 5-part clinical lecture series and participates in the tumor board to supplement resident education.
In 1992, Dr. Finger started the first worldwide use of topical chemotherapy (mitomycin) eye-drops for conjunctival melanoma and primary acquired melanosis (PAM) with atypia at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Dr. Finger also obtained the hospital’s first license to use radioactive eye-plaques for choroidal melanoma, retinoblastoma, choroidal hemangioma, and macular degeneration.
As principal investigator for the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study [funded by the National Eye Institute and the National Institute of Health], Dr. Finger brought this study to the Ocular Tumor Service of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
This study showed:
1) That 2000 cGy preoperative external beam radiation before enucleation does not decrease metastasis associated with choroidal melanoma.
2) That radioactive plaque therapy is equally effective as enucleation for the prevention of metastatic choroidal melanoma (in treatment of medium-sized choroidal melanoma).
Dr. Finger has been a physician, researcher and teacher at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and has demonstrated his commitment to The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and its patients.
