Dr. Finger joined the Department of Ophthalmology at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and established its first Ocular Oncology Service in 1989. Under Dr. Finger's direction, this clinic has grown and serves up to 30 patients per weekly session.
Within the framework of the Ocular Tumor Service, Dr. Finger teaches ophthalmology residents, visiting ophthalmologists and medical students how to diagnose ocular and orbital tumors. In addition, Dr. Finger gives a 5-part clinical lecture series and participates in the tumor board to supplement resident education.
In 1992, Dr. Finger started the first worldwide use of topical chemotherapy (mitomycin) eye-drops for conjunctival melanoma and primary acquired melanosis (PAM) with atypia at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Dr. Finger also obtained the hospital’s first license to use radioactive eye-plaques for choroidal melanoma, retinoblastoma, choroidal hemangioma, and macular degeneration.
As principal investigator for the Collaborative Ocular Melanoma Study [funded by the National Eye Institute and the National Institute of Health], Dr. Finger brought this study to the Ocular Tumor Service of The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary.
Dr. Finger has been a physician, researcher and teacher at The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and has demonstrated his commitment to The New York Eye and Ear Infirmary and its patients.
Paul T. Finger, M.D. is a Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the New York University School of Medicine. As a faculty member, in 1997 he established the Ocular Tumor Service at New York University School of Medicine.
Dr. Finger donates his time to treat patients from New York's largest Public Hospital (Bellevue Medical Center). Ophthalmologists, residents and medical students attend this clinic and learn how to diagnose and treat patients with ocular tumors and orbital diseases.
The NYU Ocular Tumor Service offers a unique service as compared to the other public hospitals in New York City.
Paul T. Finger, M.D. is also caring for eye tumor patients from the Manhattan Eye Ear and Throat Hospital (MEETH) in New York City. Having originally trained at MEETH, Dr. Finger enjoys working at this hospital, and the challenge of starting the new Ocular Tumor Service.
Within the frame-work of the Ocular Tumor Service, Dr. Finger teaches ophthalmology residents, fellows, visiting ophthalmologists and medical students new methods of diagnosis and treatment for eye tumors.
As Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the New York University School of Medicine, Dr. Finger is looking forward to attending, growing and supervising this new resource for eye tumor patients and their families.
